Get ready for a serious day out of Barcelona! The remoteness of this winemaking region will leave you with the real feeling you made it into the deep countryside. Jump in the private vehicle we will provide with and start asking questions to your English-speaking local guide, who will really enjoy telling you everything about the area you are just about to discover. Priorat has a really fascinating history of how winemaking culture escalated from totally eroded and forgotten to the very top of rankings worldwide. And all by hand of tiny, family owned and low-production focused wineries that grow vines in very particular conditions. Because of all this, Priorat is one of the only two Qualified Denominations of Origin (DOQ) in Spain (along with La Rioja), embracing higher and more severe quality standards than the traditional Spanish Denominations of Origin.
Priorat is filled with beautiful and isolated tiny villages whose economy focuses mostly on wine production nowadays. Little cellars and wineries fill a scenario of vines stacked in very steep terraces due to the hilly landscape of the region. They grow slow and old from a slate soil that happens to be very particular to this region. A harsh and dry soil, rocky and raw, where vines struggle to survive. Out of this struggle, they release a very low production of truly magical grapes that winemakers handle like gold.
You will visit two wineries in this formidable area. An expert guide of each of these cellars will take you through the facilities and, in some of them, you will also be able to visit the vineyards. Needless to say, you are going to taste the most exquisite wines they produce and be able to ask anything you want to know about the whole process and local culture. In your way from one cellar to the next you will also stop in a local restaurant, in one of the villages the hills are sprinkled with. Feast there and make the most out of this experience by enjoying the local Catalan and Spanish gastronomy by hand of a full meal before your next stop!
