We will begin our tour with a 30-minute Vaporetto ride through the lagoon, heading towards Sant'Erasmo Island, often called the "vegetable garden" of Venice. This island, once a retreat for aristocrats and a key supplier of vegetables and fruits to the Republic of Venice, remains a quiet, tourist-free haven for Venetian families and a natural gem in the Northern lagoon.
Upon arrival, we will walk along a small road that passes canals and ditches to reach the bike rental spot, where we’ll pick up countryside bikes.
The first stop will be at Torre Massimiliana, a circular fort built during the Napoleonic era and completed by the Austrians. This fort, surrounded by a stagnant moat, sometimes hosts art exhibitions, offering us a glimpse into the island's history. We’ll spend 15 minutes here.
Next, we will bike through the island, passing vegetable fields, saltmarshes, and rural dwellings. Along the way, we’ll enjoy views of the San Nicolò harbour at Lido, Punta Sabbioni, and distant Venetian belfries.
A key stop will be at a local honey producer’s family-owned apiary. Here, we’ll learn about the unique saltmarsh honey produced on the island and have the chance to taste this one-of-a-kind treat. This stop will last for 30 minutes.
As we continue our bike ride, we will reach the northern part of the island, where we’ll get a view across the water and mud flats toward Burano’s colorful houses and the monastery of San Francesco del Deserto, home to Franciscan monks.
We’ll also visit Sant'Erasmo’s church, one of the few notable structures on the island, located by the serene lagoon waters.
Finally, we will return to Venice’s Fondamente Nove by water bus. Alternatively, you may choose to stay on the island for a relaxing lunch or dinner at a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the lagoon.
