TRIP HIGHLIGHTS AND DESCRIPTION
This historical walking tour of Sarajevo offers a fascinating journey through the city's rich past, influenced by various cultures that have left their mark over the centuries. Starting at a designated meeting point, our tour begins in the heart of Sarajevo, at Sebilj, an 18th-century Ottoman-style wooden fountain located in Baščaršija Square, the bustling core of the old town.
As we continue, you'll traverse the historic Kazandžiluk Street, renowned for its metallurgy works dating back to the 16th century. Our next stop is the Sarajevo City Hall, an architectural gem from the late 19th century, which underwent extensive renovation in 2014 after sustaining damage during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992, along with the tragic loss of many invaluable books and records.
Our tour takes you across the bridge from the City Hall to the House of Spite, a place with an intriguing story that embodies Bosnian spite. Moving forward, you'll reach the Latin Bridge, infamous as the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, an event that triggered World War I.
The journey continues with a visit to the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the 16th-century clock tower. You'll explore Gazi Husrev-beg’s Bezistan and Tašlihan, both also dating back to the 16th century. The tour proceeds to the Old Orthodox Church, established in the 16th century, and the Sacred Heart Cathedral from the 19th century.
What makes Sarajevo unique is its city center, where you can find religious landmarks representing three major world religions. Finally, our tour concludes at the Meeting of Cultures sign, situated on the main walking area. Here, you'll witness the clear juxtaposition of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architectural styles, highlighting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Sarajevo's captivating history. Join us to uncover the layers of this remarkable city's past.
